From Detroit:

Take 96 west toward Lansing until you get to the Wixom exit (#159).   Turn right and follow the signs
to the Proud Lake Recreation area.  When you get to the T-stop, turn left.  Go around the curve
and turn left on Garden Road.

Thank you for such a nice comment! We try to make sure every customer has a good experience, and if they don’t, we do our best to make up for it. Do you have a Repeaters’ Club card? Rental 9 canoes and your 10th rental is free! Hope you’ll come back and get started on a card if you don’t have one.
      Thanks again! :)

  • Courtney Penny

I remember renting out canoes when I was in Girl Scouts about 20 yrs ago!

    • Verna

We have been in this same location for almost 58 years now and we have
seen a lot of boy and girl scout groups go through here. Hope you have happy memories of those times!

  • Justin Janisse

Do you ever sell you older canoes? I am very interested in getting into an aluminum canoe and taking up the sport..

    • bruce

We do indeed! Give us a call at 248-685-2379 to see what we have available.

    • Peter

      Hi Justin,
Call Alan Heavner (Owner) directly at 248-561-8274. He can help you with all your canoe needs.

  • Smogview47

A bad day on the water is better than a good day in the office!

  • Yes there is nothing like being on nice and free.

  • Gpcc171228

Do you ever rent peddle boats I have been looking for a place all day that does.

    • Trevor

We don’t have any paddle boats regrettably.  sorry!!  Maybe you can come try out our canoes and kayaks!!

    • Hlivingston2

try camp dearborn in milford off milford road

    • Sharon

Stoney creek metro park rents them at the northeast beach area

  • summy and zacy

    kuhnewing is fun

  • Most people have been reporting the excellent service provided by Heavners if you rent canoes through them. Keep up the good work. I am tempted to try them myself.

  • Franjenkins11

I have rented canoes from THE HEAVNER  Since the 80’s, A very friendly group they are. If you like to kayak or canoe give them a try, you would not be disappointed.

  • RickVB

Do you know what parts of the Proud Lake system are navigable? That is, could one canoe from Reed Lake all the way through to Proud Lake (or vice-versa)?

    • Jimmie

I paddled from Heavner’s location pass Proud Lake and was stopped at Benstein Rd (South Commerce Lake) before I had to turn around. Would have been a struggle to port up the bank and across the road.

  • Heavner Canoe & Kayak Rental is run by Chester and Stella’s eldest
son, Alan. He and his staff manage an inventory of more than 200 canoes
and kayaks, which they rent at three lakes along the Huron River. In
addition to hourly rentals, they teach beginning kayak lessons led by instructors certified by the American Canoe Association and the
American Red Cross. The sessions cover water safety, stroke techniques,
and how to play dead when being attacked by a bigger kayak.

  • Ashley

do they have two person kayaks?

  • WW

We do our Company paddle here every year. After being shafted by Skips in Ann Arbor, we will always go here.

  • TenableBelief

Please place a picture of the front of your place!!! I drove from Romulus trying to find you on 8-10 and couldn’t! Went down Garden Road to dead-end at the small park…a resident in the area told me how to get to where Garden picked up again but the addresses didn’t match. If you are INSIDE the recreational area, why aren’t there any signs with your name on it to direct one down all the roads and offshoots?!?!

    • bruceheavner

So sorry you had trouble finding us! On the Proud Lake Location page (where you posted this), there is a directions section, with our exact location noted with the red Google marker. You can zoom and scroll to see exactly where we are.
